2023 Scientific Report
Intelligent systems for aquaculture consist of devices and systems integrated into platforms for real-time monitoring of the quality of standing and flowing waters. In the context of climate changes and excessive pollution, the physicochemical parameters of the waters must be closely monitored since they directly affect the life and development of living creatures in the underwater environment. Their monitoring allows quick intervention in case of growth above acceptable values, thus reducing negative effects on the aquatic environment.
As part of the activities carried out in 2023, a portable optical device was created to precisely detect nitrite and nitrate ions dissolved in liquid media. This device consists of a set of optical sensors provided with a pumping system for the samples to be analyzed and an electronic system for command, control, retrieval and data storage. A similar experimental laboratory optical device was also made.
The liquid samples analyzed consisted of solutions with predefined concentrations of NaNO3 and NaNO2 and liquid samples taken from fish ponds from the Ovidius Aqua Line farm. The detection limit of the developed optical sensors was established by measuring the relative absorbance for a wide range of NaNO3 and NaNO2 solutions with known concentrations. Thus, the minimum detection limit of nitrate (NO3-) and nitrite (NO2-) ions in distilled water of 5.8 mg/L and 0.6 mg/L was established.
The portable optical device was tested at the Ovidius Aqua Line fish farm, where it worked continuously for 2 months. The data provided were retrieved and stored in the Grafana server platform developed by BEIA Consult International, a partner in the iPREMAS project. The laboratory calibration of the portable optical device using solutions with known concentrations allowed the determination of the nitrite and nitrate concentrations in the fish ponds of the Ovidius Aqua Line fish farm.
