2024 Scientific Report
As part of the activities carried out in 2024, the portable optical device was improved, implemented and validated for the real-time detection and measurement of nitrate and nitrite concentrations in water. The detection limit of nitrate and nitrite concentrations was established according to the wavelength of the LEDs. Thus, the detection limit for NO3- is 2.2 + 0.04 mg/L at 295 nm and 4.4 + 0.1 mg/L at 310 nm. The detection limit for NO2- is 2.6 + 0.4 mg/L at 275 nm and 0.3 + 0.007 mg/L at 340 nm. By using the calibration lines of NO3- and NO2- obtained by numerical fitting, higher detection limits can be reached. For example, a measured absorbance of 1.7×10-3 corresponds to a nitrate or nitrite concentration of 0.03 mg/L.
Following the implementation of the optical device at the fish farm, nitrate and nitrite concentrations were monitored through the GRAFANA platform of the partner BEIA Consult International. Validation of the device operation and of the recorded data was carried out by measuring and monitoring nitrates and nitrites in real time at the Ovidius AquaLine fish farm, following its calibration with nitrate and nitrite solutions of predefined concentrations. A TRL7 technology of the portable optical device was achieved and a technological transfer to the partner BEIA Consult International through the assignment contract 1561/27.02.2024.
